SUMMARY:Can International Law help the world out of the current chaos?
DESCRIPTION:The US incursion into Venezuela and abduction of President Maduro followed by President Trump’s renewed push to take control of Greenland\, and now a new threat to bomb Iran have undermined the UN Charter and the rules of international behaviour.  These actions have replaced the “international rules-based order” with “might is right”\, international law with lawlessness. \nPresident Trump has boasted that he doesn’t ‘need international law’ as a constraint\, only his ‘own morality’.  In the face of such attack\, what can International Law offer? Can it help us out of this mess? \nA most timely discussion with two international respected legal experts. \nDr Juliette McIntyre\, Adelaide University \nDr McIntyre is a Senior Lecturer in Law at the University of South Australia and a recognised specialist in international courts and tribunals. Dr McIntyre’s academic work has been published in leading journals\, appears several times in the annual International Court of Justice Bibliography\, and has been cited in multiple written and oral submissions before the Court. She also has significant litigation experience\, including as counsel in cases before international courts and tribunals. \nDr Tamer Morris\, University of Sydney. \nTamer Morris is a senior lecturer at the University of Sydney\, where he teaches and researches in international law\, United Nations peacekeeping\, and international humanitarian law. Tamer also teaches in private international law and the conflict of laws. Tamer was awarded his PhD from the University of Sydney on the legal obligation to protect in UN peacekeeping. Tamer’s current research focus is on the laws of the protection of civilians\, and the legal responsibility of the State to protect. \nModerator \nMelanie Morrison is a human rights\, peace and climate justice advocate with extensive leadership experience in partnerships\, strategy\, communications and program development.  She is currently Executive Director of the Sydney Peace Foundation.

DESCRIPTION:Join a panel of experts for a conversation that tackles the moral and ethical obligations integral to research and investing priorities. \nWe are living in an era of overlapping crises: from climate catastrophe to devastating wars\, alongside the age-old ravages of inequality at home and across the globe. As these struggles escalate\, many ordinary people are questioning their own responsibility\, and possibility their complicity\, in these disasters. What prospects are there for responding? What avenues for meaningful action?\n \nWith the ongoing wars in Gaza and Ukraine\, these concerns have come into sharper focus. This panel of experts\, with a particular focus on the context of financialised globalisation\, will examine some of these uncomfortable questions\, and our moral and ethical obligations to address adverse human rights and climate justice impacts. \nProfessor David Kinley holds the Chair in Human Rights Law at the University of Sydney Law School. David has worked for 25 years as a consultant and adviser on international and domestic human rights law in (or with agencies from) China\, Vietnam\, Indonesia\, South Africa\, Bangladesh\, Thailand\, Iraq\, Nepal\, Laos\, the Pacific Islands\, and Myanmar. His particular expertise is in human rights and the global economy\, focusing on the respective roles and responsibilities of corporations and states. \nDr Claire Parfitt is a Lecturer in Political Economy at the University of Sydney\, where she completed her doctorate in 2020. A critical engagement with ethical investing and corporate sustainability\, her research contributes to debates in the social studies of finance\, moral philosophy\, economic geography\, cultural economy\, intellectual property and interdisciplinary accounting literatures. \nDr Richard Denniss: Executive Director of the Australia Institute. Richard is a prominent Australian economist\, author and public policy commentator\, and has spent the last twenty years moving between policy-focused roles in academia\, federal politics and think-tanks. He was also a Lecturer in Economics at the university of Newcastle and former Associate Professor in the Crawford School of Public Policy at ANU. He is a regular contributor to The Monthly and the author of several books including: Econobabble\, Curing Affluenza and Dead Right: How Neoliberalism Ate Itself and What Comes Next? \nThis panel will take the form of an extended Q&A. Please consider sending your questions in the registration form. \nThis event is hosted by the Sydney Peace Foundation with the support of the University of Sydney and the Australia Institute.

SUMMARY:Joseph Stiglitz on tackling inequality: What's next?
DESCRIPTION:“The problem of inequality is not so much a matter of technical economics. It’s really a problem of practical politics.” Joseph E. Stiglitz \nIn both developing and developed nations\, the gap between the rich and the rest is spiraling out of control – a haunting reality that according to Professor Joseph Stiglitz is neither accidental nor inevitable. Globalisation and rapid technological change coupled with the disappearing safety net of the welfare state have left many struggling to get by. \nThese are challenges that Nobel Prize-winner Joseph Stiglitz – author\, academic and perhaps the closest thing in the world to a celebrity economist – sets out to solve.  \nSo\, is our economic system fundamentally broken? Has radical inequality become our inevitable global future\, or can significant overhaul of public policy “fix it”? \nDiagnosing inequality is much easier than solving it. If politics and public policy have gone hand in hand with the rise of inequality\, what will it take for governments to build enough political will to turn the tide? What role does international coordination play in helping states tackle this global problem? And how can everyday Australians strengthen the push for change? \nIn this talk marking his 2018 Sydney Peace Prize win\, Joseph Stiglitz will explain which ideas about wealth distribution and taxation should be discredited or revived\, how the economic status quo ties in with the recent upsurge in populism\, and what economic scholarship should do to help bring policies in step with today’s economic transformations. \nProfessor Stiglitz will appear in conversation with Dr Alexandra Heath\, Head of the Economic Analysis Department at the Reserve Bank of Australia. \nThis talk is hosted by the School of Economics\, Sydney Policy Lab and Sydney Peace Foundation. \nPLEASE NOTE: Doors open at 10:00am for a prompt 10:30am start. \nLOCATION: Social Sciences Building Lecture Theatre 200\, University of Sydney\, Camperdown campus. See map: bit.ly/SSBSydneyUni

SUMMARY:Joseph Stiglitz: Global Inequality and the 1%
DESCRIPTION:‘Wealth begets power\, which begets more wealth\,’ Joseph Stiglitz has argued. \nIs our economic system fundamentally broken? Who\, exactly\, are the 1% and how did they get to control so much of the world’s wealth and resources? And are free-market fundamentalists shooting themselves in the Louboutin with short-term\, self-serving policies? \nThese are among the questions that preoccupy Nobel Prize-winner Joseph Stiglitz – author\, academic and perhaps the closest thing in the world to a celebrity economist. \nStarting out as a student activist during the civil-rights movement\, Stiglitz\, now a professor at Columbia University\, has devoted his working life to understanding and rectifying the complex problems of global poverty and inequality. Stiglitz coined the notion of ‘the 1%’ in his influential 2012 book\, The Price of Inequality\, and has served as an economic advisor at the United Nations and as chief economist at the World Bank. \nIn Australia to receive the 2018 Sydney Peace Prize\, Stiglitz will appear in conversation with Mary Kostakidis at the Athenaeum Theatre in Melbourne to discuss global inequality – and what we can do about it. Is profound economic overhaul possible in advanced democracies? Which old ideas about wealth distribution are discredited\, and which deserve to be revived? And how does the recent global wave of populist political movements play into\, and against\, the economic status quo? \nPresented in partnership with the Sydney Peace Foundation\, Oxfam Australia and the Reichstein Foundation. \nEmbiggen Books will be our bookseller at this event. \nThis event will be Auslan interpreted.

SUMMARY:Wheeler Centre\, Melbourne - Black Lives Matter: In Conversation with Jack Latimore
DESCRIPTION:In February 2012\, an unarmed African-American high-school student\, Trayvon Martin\, was shot dead in Sanford\, Florida. His death was a flashpoint in American race relations\, sparking protests across the United States and the beginning of a totally new kind of civil-rights movement: #blacklivesmatter. \nThe movement – founded by Patrisse Cullors\, Opal Tometi and Alicia Garza – fights for justice and dignity for black people. Diffuse\, inclusive and multifaceted\, #blacklivesmatter has built momentum online and\, crucially\, on the ground. Its activists have enjoyed wins in court rooms\, in the media\, on the streets and in Barack Obama’s White House. The message has resonated across the globe\, with large turnouts for rallies not just across the US but also in Brazil\, Australia\, South Africa and other countries. \nIn Australia to collect the Sydney Peace Prize\, four of Black Lives Matter’s founders and leaders – Cullors\, Tometi and Garza\, and Toronto BLM Chapter co-founder Rodney Diverlus – will talk with Jack Latimore about the achievements and broader goals of #blacklivesmatter … and how we can translate the lessons of the movement to face and fight entrenched inequality for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in Australia. \nPresented in partnership with the Sydney Peace Foundation.
