SUMMARY:Supporting Peace & Humanitarian Aid Efforts in Sudan
DESCRIPTION:After over two years of brutal conflict in Sudan\, more than 11 million people are in need of urgent health care and humanitarian assistance. The humanitarian disaster is the result of a deadly combination of challenges to the provision of health care\, a collapse of the hospital system and a failure of parties in the conflict to protect civilians. And\, with the ongoing threat of escalation\, there is a real risk of further mass atrocities. \nThis panel discussion will bring together experts to explore the health and humanitarian crisis in Sudan and the global response to what is now considered the world’s worst displacement crisis. \nPanellists: \nDr Majdi Sabahelzain Dafallah: Majdi is a public health researcher from Sudan. He works as a research fellow at the School of Public Health\, University of Sydney. His research focuses on assessing and addressing access to and acceptance of vaccination in fragile and conflict states. Before joining the University of Sydney in 2023\, Majdi held several positions in Sudan\, including assistant professor and director of the Nutrition and Health Center for Training and Research at Ahfad University for Women. Additionally\, he served as a National consultant for UNICEF\, where he co-led the development of the National Strategy for Risk Communication and Community Engagement (RCCE) for the Ministry of Health in Sudan. \nDr Eyal Mayroz: Eyal is a Senior Lecturer in Peace and Conflict Studies\, at University of Sydney. His background includes genocide studies and counter-terrorism. Eyal is a member of the Genocide Prevention Advisory Network\, an international network of experts who advise governments on the causes\, consequences\, and prevention of genocide and other mass atrocities. \nDr Ahlam Ibrahim: Dr Ahlam is a dedicated General Practitioner with a passion for delivering comprehensive healthcare services. A graduate of the prestigious Khartoum University\, Dr. Ibrahim has amassed extensive experience working in various settings across Sudan. Currently based in Sydney\, Dr. Ibrahim works as a GP\, with a special interest in women’s and children’s health\, as well as mental health medication. She is the founder of SAHWA\, a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting vulnerable communities. \nThe discussion will include a video message from Eric Reeves. \nEric Reeves has spent more than 25 years working full-time as a Sudan researcher and analyst\, publishing extensively both in the US and internationally. He has also published in numerous academic and scholarly journals\, including the African Studies Review\, Yale Journal of International Affairs\, Anthropology News\, Institute for the Study of Genocide Newsletter\, Dissent\, and the Council on Foreign Relations (“Issues Briefs”). He is a former Senior Fellow at Harvard University’s François-Xavier Bagnoud Center for Health and Human Rights and is currently a Fellow at the Rift Valley Institute. He has testified several times before the Congress and has served as a consultant to a number of human rights and humanitarian organizations operating in Sudan. He currently heads up a humanitarian project in Zamzam IDP camp in North Darfur\, home to almost 1 million displaced people. \nThis event is hosted by the Sydney Peace Foundation with the support of the University of Sydney’s Faculty of Medicine and Health. \nPhoto credit: Eric Reeves

SUMMARY:Weapons\, climate justice and investing ethically
DESCRIPTION:Join a panel of experts for a conversation that tackles the moral and ethical obligations integral to research and investing priorities. \nWe are living in an era of overlapping crises: from climate catastrophe to devastating wars\, alongside the age-old ravages of inequality at home and across the globe. As these struggles escalate\, many ordinary people are questioning their own responsibility\, and possibility their complicity\, in these disasters. What prospects are there for responding? What avenues for meaningful action?\n \nWith the ongoing wars in Gaza and Ukraine\, these concerns have come into sharper focus. This panel of experts\, with a particular focus on the context of financialised globalisation\, will examine some of these uncomfortable questions\, and our moral and ethical obligations to address adverse human rights and climate justice impacts. \nProfessor David Kinley holds the Chair in Human Rights Law at the University of Sydney Law School. David has worked for 25 years as a consultant and adviser on international and domestic human rights law in (or with agencies from) China\, Vietnam\, Indonesia\, South Africa\, Bangladesh\, Thailand\, Iraq\, Nepal\, Laos\, the Pacific Islands\, and Myanmar. His particular expertise is in human rights and the global economy\, focusing on the respective roles and responsibilities of corporations and states. \nDr Claire Parfitt is a Lecturer in Political Economy at the University of Sydney\, where she completed her doctorate in 2020. A critical engagement with ethical investing and corporate sustainability\, her research contributes to debates in the social studies of finance\, moral philosophy\, economic geography\, cultural economy\, intellectual property and interdisciplinary accounting literatures. \nDr Richard Denniss: Executive Director of the Australia Institute. Richard is a prominent Australian economist\, author and public policy commentator\, and has spent the last twenty years moving between policy-focused roles in academia\, federal politics and think-tanks. He was also a Lecturer in Economics at the university of Newcastle and former Associate Professor in the Crawford School of Public Policy at ANU. He is a regular contributor to The Monthly and the author of several books including: Econobabble\, Curing Affluenza and Dead Right: How Neoliberalism Ate Itself and What Comes Next? \nThis panel will take the form of an extended Q&A. DESCRIPTION:Women’s Club Member Lecture: Insights into this year’s Sydney Peace Prize to the International Red Cross Red Crescent Movement\nKate Miranda\, Director\, NSW at Australian Red Cross will talk on the work of the Australian Red Cross\, its 110 year anniversary celebration\, the essential humanitarian work of the ARC\, ICRC and IFRC and the Sydney Peace Prize. \nIn November\, this year’s Peace Prize will be presented to the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement (the Movement)\, a humanitarian network of 17 million volunteers and staff\, for saving lives and preventing the suffering of people affected by armed conflict\, for the Movement’s commitment to International Humanitarian Law\, with the Council specifically wishing to acknowledge the work of the Palestinian Red Crescent. \nThis year is particularly significant as it marks the 75th anniversary of the adoption of the Geneva Conventions\, to which the ICRC’s impartial\, neutral and essential work is bound. \nPresident of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies\, Kate Forbes\, will be visiting Sydney in November to receive the $50\,000 Sydney Peace Prize at the award ceremony at Sydney Town Hall on Monday\, 18 November where she will give the 2024 Sydney Peace Prize lecture. Later in the week she will be the guest of honour at our Gala Dinner on Thursday\, 21 November at the Sheraton on the Park. \nDon’t miss this Member Lecture to discuss insights into this years Sydney Peace Prize. \nThe Sydney Peace Foundation’s book Conversations in Peace Volume 2 of Sydney Peace Prize Lectures from 2012-2022 will be on sale for $25. \n  \nBiographies \nKate Miranda is the Director NSW at Australian Red Cross\, Non-Executive Director\, Adjunct Fellow at Macquarie University and UTS Business School. She specialises in corporate communications and organisational strategy and has more than 20 years’ experience in not-for-profit management\, federal government advisory roles and media relations. Kate began her career as a journalist for the ABC. \nDr Jane Fulton\, our Philanthropy Director at the Sydney Peace Foundation\, spearheads our fundraising efforts. Following the completion of her PhD on environmental conflict at Sydney University\, she worked with the Centre for Peace and Conflict Studies\, the Foundation’s birthplace\, before joining the UNDP in New York. She is dedicated to fostering resilient and inclusive communities\, with a keen focus on the Sustainable Development Goals. \n

SUMMARY:The Past\, Present\, and Future of the Palestine Investigation
DESCRIPTION:Join Professor Kevin Jon Heller\, Special Adviser on War Crimes to the Prosecutor\, for a lunchtime talk on the past\, present and future of the Palestine Investigation. \nOn May 20th\, the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court\, Karim Khan KC\, announced that his Office had applied for arrest warrants against three senior Hamas leaders and two high-ranking Israeli government officials. This talk\, which is based on Professor Kevin Jon Heller’s role as Special Adviser on War Crimes to the Prosecutor\, will discuss the past\, present\, and future of the investigation in Palestine. He will explain what a Special Adviser does\, provide a history of the Palestine investigation\, discuss the arrest-warrant applications\, and offer a few thoughts for what the future might hold for the warrants and the investigation more generally. \nKevin Jon Heller is Professor of International Law and Security at the University of Copenhagen’s Centre for Military Studies and Distinguished Visiting Professor of Law at Universidad Torcuato Di Tella in Buenos Aires. He is an Academic Member of Doughty Street Chambers in London and currently serves as Special Advisor to the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court on War Crimes.

DESCRIPTION:Please join us for a panel discussion on the Trial of Jimmy Lai\, Media Freedom and Democracy in Hong Kong\, featuring: \nSebastien Lai\, son of Jimmy Lai\, renowned pro-democracy campaigner and media entrepreneur \nProfessor Ben Saul\, Challis Chair of International Law at the University of Sydney and the United Nations Special Rapporteur \nCaoilfhionn Gallagher KC\, human rights lawyer and expert in media freedom and journalists’ safety \nJennifer Robinson\, award-winning barrister specialising in human rights and media freedom law \nJimmy Lai\, renowned pro-democracy campaigner\, media entrepreneur\, writer and founder of Apple Daily\, is currently on trial in Hong Kong under the controversial new National Security Law (NSL)\, facing the possibility of a lifetime in prison. \nApple Daily was Hong Kong’s most popular Chinese language newspaper until its forced closure in 2021\, which Amnesty International described as ‘the blackest day for media freedom in Hong Kong’. \nMr Lai has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize\, in recognition of the persecution he has faced for his work advocating for democracy and civil liberties in Hong Kong. DESCRIPTION:Is Peace and Democracy possible in Myanmar? \nIn this keynote address Aung Myo Min will discuss the movement for democracy in Myanmar and the role of the National Unity Government of Myanmar in laying the path for the country’s transition to a liberal democracy\, with a separation of powers and guarantees of fundamental rights and freedoms. \nDr Susan Banki\, whose research focuses on human rights and social justice in the Asia-Pacific region\, met with Minister Aung Myo Min when conducting research on the Thailand-Myanmar border in the mid-2000s. In the Q & A\, Dr Banki will ask the Minister questions about his role as an activist over many years\, his work as an LGBTQI advocate\, and the promise and future of Myanmar in light of the 2021 coup. \nThe event will commence with an introduction by Dr Susan Banki who will also chair the Q&A. \nProfessor Lisa Adkins\, Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences\, will conduct the award ceremony. \nPlease join us at 3.30pm for refreshments before the event. RSVP here. \nAung Myo Min is the Union Minister for Human Rights in the cabinet of the National Unity Government of Myanmar. He was one of Myanmar’s prominent human rights advocates before he joined the NUG and was a youth leader in the 1988 democracy uprising. Aung Myo Min lived in exile for 23 years and continued working on human rights issues in Myanmar\, particularly on marginalized people. He graduated with a Master’s degree in human rights from Columbia University\, New York\, in 1993. He has received eight human rights awards for his outstanding human rights work including the Schuman Human Rights Award in 2017. \nThe Sydney Peace Foundation’s Gold Medal for Human Rights is a prestigious acknowledgement of an individual’s tireless commitment to human rights. DESCRIPTION:A thought provoking play by Kinetic Energy Theatre Company\, inspired by the work of Noam Chomsky\, Arundhati Roy & Wikileaks \n\nOne hour of wit\, pathos\, live music and visual imagery exposing a Machiavellian world in Free Fall \n\n is an adaptation of two political essays by Arundhati Roy: “The loneliness of Noam Chomsky”\, written in honour of Chomsky for his monumental legacy as analyst of Power and the Mass Media. And: “Confronting Empire”\, Roy’s passionate call for resistance and change. \nThis gritty play draws an arch right from the birth of the “Idea of America” to the US Empire’s present day excesses. Australian audiences no doubt will draw parallels to their own colonial past and post-colonial present. \nWhat lies behind the phrases ‘Free Speech’\, the ‘Free Market’\, the ‘Free World’ and that beautiful\, sunny word ‘Freedom’… \nAs you read this\, whistleblower Bradley Manning is standing trial before a US military court\, WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange is being threatened with extradition to Sweden and possibly the USA\, while all efforts are being made by the powers that be to shut down WikiLeaks. \nWe live in an Orwellian world. And yet\, despite the most heinous crimes against nature and humanity\, hope that ‘another world is possible’ springs eternal. Alternatives are being created\, and all around the globe people are uniting in their demand for justice and peace. \nEMPIRE returns by popular demand after performances held last year coinciding with Chomsky’s stay in Sydney\, when he received the 2011 Sydney Peace Prize.
