Dr Hannah Middleton Peace and Conflict Studies Scholarship

In 2025, in memory of peace activist and former Sydney Peace Foundation executive offer Dr Hannah Middleton, the Sydney Peace Foundation launched a scholarship for Masters students at the Institute for Peace, Conflict and Social Studies at the National University of East Timor. This scholarship underscores the importance of peacebuilding to enhance the social, cultural and economic development in this young nation.

The seed funding for this scholarship has been generously donated by Emeritus Professor Stuart Rees. But we need your help to keep it going.

Please donate via this link.  For tax-deductible donations to the Sydney Peace Foundation go to our website: www.sydneypeacefoundation.org.au/donate.

The Institute of Peace, Conflict and Social Studies

The Institute for Peace, Conflict and Social Studies (IPACSS), formerly known as the Peace Centre, was founded in 2007 as part of the National University of Timor Leste. The Institute’s mission is to ‘educate for peacebuilding’ to enhance the social, cultural and economic development of the more marginalised members in Timorese society.

Research undertaken at IPACSS over the past decade highlights ‘sustainable development’ in Timor-Leste through the lens of ‘positive peace’. This involves research into ‘the green economy’, prioritising sustainable jobs, goods and services that encourage processes with an overall positive impact on the health of the planet together with notions of the ‘solidarity economy’ that includes commercial and non-commercial activity oriented to meet individual and collective social needs over profit maximisation.

We thank our long-term supporter Dr Lynda Blanchard, SSEAC Country Convenor, University of Sydney and Visiting Professor, Universidade Nacional Timor Lorosa’e, for proposing the scholarship opportunity.

Peace and Social Justice Scholarship

In 2024 a scholarship was established in memory of Marty Morrison and a lifetime dedicated to advocating for Education, Peace and Justice. In 2025 the scholarship supported students in a Master of Social Justice at the University of Sydney. Given the Sydney Peace Foundation’s disengagement from the University of Sydney, the scholarship has been discontinued.

The Sydney Peace Foundation Rotary Fellowship

The Sydney Peace Foundation, in partnership with Rotary International, is seeking expressions of interest for the Rotary Peace Fellowship. These Fellowships are designed for leaders with work experience in peace and development.

The fellows are committed to community and international service and the pursuit of peace. Each year, The Rotary Foundation awards up to 50 fellowships for master’s degrees and up to 80 for certificate studies at premier universities.

Annually, Rotary awards up to 130 fully funded fellowships for dedicated leaders from around the world to study at leading global peace centres.

Since the program began in 2002, the Rotary Peace Centres have trained more than 1,700 fellows who now work in over 140 countries. Many serve as leaders in governments; NGOs; education and research institutions; peacekeeping and law enforcement agencies; and international organizations like the United Nations and the World Bank.

The 2026-27 application will be available online in February 2025. However, we are seeking expressions of interest from potential candidates from 23rd September 2024.
