Daily Life in Palestine, with Nathan Thrall

Drawing on a decade spent as the director of the International Crisis Group’s Arab-Israeli Project, Nathan Thrall is in Sydney to discuss his new book, A Day in the Life of Abed Salama, an extraordinary micro-history that illuminates the reality of daily life in Palestine. He will be joined by Rawan Arraf, Executive Director at the Australian Centre for International Justice (ACIJ) and Dr Ihab Shalbak, from the University of Sydney’s Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences.

Nathan Thrall is the author of A Day in the Life of Abed Salama: Anatomy of a Jerusalem Tragedy, which was named a best book of 2023 by The New YorkerTimeThe New Statesman, and the Financial Times. He spent a decade at the International Crisis Group, where he was director of the Arab-Israeli Project, and has taught at Bard College. Originally from California, he lives in Jerusalem.

Rawan Arraf is the founder, executive director and principal lawyer at the Australian Centre for International Justice, Australia’s first international justice legal centre.

Ihab Shalbak is a lecturer in human rights and social justice. Before joining the University of Sydney, Ihab worked both in community and government positions including as a Senior Research and Policy Advisor at the Australian Human Rights Commission.
